AMSTERDAM
I changed my itinerary. Instead of going to the Rembrandt House Museum in the Jodenbreestraat, an old Jewish neighborhood, I went to the Dutch Resistance Museum (Verzetsmuseum) in the same area. It suited my mood. Given the weighty topic, I didn't take too many pictures. Through short films, maps, biographical artifacts, and interactive features, the Museum describes Netherlanders' moral dilemmas once they understood what occupation meant.

This guy was a "Jew Hunter," so I feel as if it's okay to make fun of him. I mean, look at him! Look at that hair! |
I found these small plaques imbedded on the sidewalks in front of some of the houses. On close examination, I saw they represent people who had lived in the houses and were eventually deported to concentration camps. Falkenberg, Bergen-Belsen, Sobibor, Auschwitz.
RANDOM SHOTS OF THE DAY:
The breakfast room and lobby of Mr. Jordaan, the hotel where I am staying.
Sad is all I can say. But so interesting! Dolores
ReplyDeleteI knew it wouldn’t be a barrel of laughs; but glad you posted pictures. Judi
ReplyDeleteSo pertinent for these times. I missed those tiles. RL
ReplyDeleteI suddenly saw them. They must be everywhere, especially in that neighborhood, which was decimated.
DeleteNichole - thank you for bearing witness and honoring lives lost.
