DAY 4: Wednesday, March 12, A Day with Vincent

AMSTERDAM

I visited the Van Gogh Museum. It contains the largest collection of Van Gogh's work. It overwhelmed me. There's nothing I can say about it that you wouldn't expect. I took very few photographs because of this ...

As you can see, getting close to many of the paintings proved difficult. Besides, far better pictures exist online, and even those don't do the work justice. I compiled a list of 28 paintings that amazed me--some by Vincent, others by his friends, influences, and admirers--that I'd I be happy to share. I geeked out a little. An unexpected thrill was the museum's special exhibition of work by Anselm Kiefer, a German painter and sculptor. I wasn't familiar with Kiefer before this, but his paintings--influenced greatly by Van Gogh's--bowled me over.

Later I was hungry.

A statue on the Museumplein dedicated to the women of Ravensbruck, 1940-1945.
It reads: To those who continued to say no to fascism to the very end.
